Other trips discussed for the ECAFA: Saturday, August 4, 2007, Reenactment of the Revolutionary War Battle at the House in the Horseshoe, located near Goldston, N. C. just a short drive south of Randolph County. This battle was fought between groups of citizen-soldiers known as Whigs or Revolutionists and Tories or Colonists loyal to Britain. The 1781 battle began the morning of August 5 when Whig Colonel Philip Alston and his band of colonial patriots camped around the house were attached by a larger group of Tories. A loyalist named David Fanning led the Tories. To encourage the colonials to give up, the Tories tried to torch the house by rolling a cart filled with burning straw against it. After several casualties on both sides, Alston surrendered. Free event. Saturday, October 27, 2007 – Visit a 19th Century Village (1840) near Hickory, North Carolina. The village is only opened to the public one time a year for the annual festival which features artisans of crafts of the period from spinning to smithing. Admission is strictly limited to ticket holders only and must be purchased in advance. The fee for the event is $25.00 per person. There will be more information at a later date. Saturday, December 8, 2007 – Trip to Biltmore House to enjoy the Christmas decorations and festivities: www.biltmore.com. This is America’s largest privately owned house. It was built in 1895 by George H. Vanderbilt. The home is full of art, history and luxury. More details on these events are on page 13 in the Allred Family Newsletter for Summer 2007. Cost is involved in this trip – details later in the year. ECAFA donated $100.00 to the Frances Ackerman Building Fund in Ramseur. This woman’s home was condemned and torn down (beyond repair). She was living in a small storage building (on land she owned) which had no running water or electricity. The Police Chief and Mayor of Ramseur established a fund to build her a new home. She is now in her new home thanks to many generous donations. She is an elderly woman 71 years of age. The ECAFA also gave the Ramseur Community Museum $25.00. This museum contains the tombstones of Willam Trogdon, Patriot, who came to this area in the 1750’s and was killed on Sandy Creek by David Fanning during the Revolutionary War. August 1, 2007,is cut-off time for ordering software from Techsoup. Contact Linda Cooper or Harlan Sexton if interested in ordering the software. A sympathy card was signed and will be sent to the family of Kimber Allred Pilkington who recently died of complications due to breast cancer. She was the daughter of the late Tot and Adrian Allred. Linda Cooper and Eddie Clay Allred are planning to attend the 2007 Rocky Mountain Allred Reunion June 29 and 30 in Spring City, Utah. The next East Coast Allred Family Association meeting to be announced. There being no further discussion or business, the meeting was adjourned. Respectively submitted, Becky Allred Sexton
