DYS 19 is also known as DYS 394.
It is obvious from our observation of 1000's of samples that some markers
change or mutate at a faster rate than others. While that actual 'faster rate'
has not yet been definitively calculated, not all markers should be treated the
same for evaluation purposes.
The markers in red have shown a faster mutation rate then the average, and
therefore these markers are very helpful at splitting lineages into sub sets, or
branches, within your family tree.
Explained another way, if you match exactly on all of the markers except for one
or a few of the markers we have determined mutate more quickly, then despite the
mutation this mismatch only slightly decreases the probability of two people in
your surname group who match 11/12 or even 23/25 of not sharing a recent common
ancestor.
What Does It Mean?
Good question. Reggie, Dan
and Bob are our first three participants and we expected their DNA to
match since all are Arledge descendants. But, as you can see, there are a
lot of mutations or differences in Reggie's result markers. However, Bob
and Dan matched with only one mutation or different marker. One mutation is
common as you read above. This means Bob and Dan now have DNA proof that
they descend from the same Arledge ancestor - but Reggie is not related to this
family. It's not unusual to have 1 or
may even 2 mutations or different markers within a family - but Reggie has 17 of
the 25 markers different.
As you can see from the family
tree info below, Reggie has only been able to trace his family back to his Great
Grandfather, Moses Elijah Arledge. But, his family researcher has not been
able to figure out who Moses' parents were. They were hoping to match up
to the Arledge family Dan and Bob descend from. The DNA results show that
Reggie descends from a totally different family which just happens to have the
same last name - or the common ancestor is so far back in time (30 generations
or more) that the DNA test
we are taking is not picking up the common markers.
Another thought is that somewhere
back in Reggie's family tree is an ancestor who was an adopted child or
illegitimate child who no one ever knew about, talked about or was ever
documented. This is something that would be extremely hard to ever prove,
but is a possibility that needs to be kept in mind.
The 12 marker DNA test that tells
us that the common ancestor is within 14 - 30 generations back in the family
tree. Upgrading to the 25 marker test will narrow the time frame down to
the common ancestor being within 7 - 13 generations back in the family
tree.
Keep in mind that the Allred
and York families are having similar
results. Take at look at their pages to see their results. Although
both thought there was only one Allred family and/or only one York family in
America - both have received DNA results that prove this is not true. To
date there are 3 different York families and 2 different Allred families per the
DNA results. So, our research needs to continue.
Family Tree Info
Robert Reginald "Reggie" Arledge
Father: Robert Eugene Arledge
Grandfather: Hubert Lee Arledge
Great Grandfather: Moses Elijah Arledge 10/13/1854 - 11/20/1945 (died
Bessemer, Jefferson County, Alabama)
This is as far back as the family has been able to trace so far. On census
records, Moses Elijah listed his father was born in Germany and mother was born
in Scotland.
To date, research is leading family members to believe that he was born in
either Tennessee or Georgia and his parents were Samuel and Molly Arledge.
Moses married Melissa Jane Adkin on May 30, 1898 per a listing in the newspaper
"Sequatchie Valley News" in the Whitwell section. Their
son, Hubert Lee Arledge, was born in Monteagle (also spelled Mount Eagle),
Marion County, Tennessee April 27, 1899. Per family records, Moses was a
coal / ore miner.

Where do we Come From?
What do the markers mean? DYS markers 385-a, 385-b, 426 and 388
designate what race we are - or where our geographical origins are. Bob
& Dan's
markers for those categories were:
11 14 12 12
Reggie's markers were:
11 11 12 12
11,14, 12, 12 are the common markers for European descent. This
means the earliest Arledge ancestors for Dan and Bob - going as far back in human history as we can -
originated in Europe or the British Isles except Ireland. (Ireland
has a different set of numbers for some unexplained reason.)
