Want to join the project - but your family name isn't listed?  No problem.  Just contact Linda.

We have so many questions about these families that no one has been able to find the answers for.  Four of my favorite Allred questions are:

1.  Those first six Allred men who appeared in NC in the 1750's:  Thomas, John, Solomon Jr., Solomon Sr., William Sr. and William Jr. - who were they?  A combination of fathers & sons?  Cousins?

2.  Jeremiah York lived near Solomon Allred in Chester County, PA in the 1720's.  Jeremiah later lived near those four Allred men in Randolph County, NC.  Coincidence - or were they related?

3.  Were these men descended from the Allred family of Eccles Parish, Lancashire, England?

4.  Many Allred and York families have not been able to find documentation linking them back to any of these four Allred men or Jeremiah York.  Are these "mystery" families related to us too?

5.  Are the Arledge and Allred families related - or two totally separate families?

Science has progressed to the point that DNA will now be able to answer these questions.  The DNA tests will tell participants if they have an ancestor in common and a range of generations back that ancestor is on the family tree.  Example:  Let's say one of John's GGGGGrandsons and one of Solomon's GGGGGrandsons each take the 12 marker test.  Their tests show that they have a common ancestor 14 generations back.  Now we know they were definitely related.  But, let's say one of John's GGGGGrandsons and one of Solomon's GGGGGrandsons each take the 25 marker test.  Their tests show that they have a common ancestor 7 generations back, then we will know that John and Solomon were brothers.  Won't that be an exciting day!!!

This DNA test is a saliva test using a tool that looks like a giant cotton swab that you run around the inside of your mouth.  Click on the link to read more about the test kit:  www.familytreedna.com/kit.html .
Participants must be male descendants from an all male descendancy line.  As part of the Allred DNA Project, participants will be charged a reduced price of $105 per participant for the 12 marker test and $171 per for the 25 marker test.

What's the difference between the 12 and 25 marker tests?  With the 25 marker test, we learn more about the family, but, more importantly, we narrow down the range within that common ancestor might be.

We are using Family Tree DNA (www.familytreedna.com) which is a Houston, TX based company specializing in DNA testing for genealogy purposes.  I encourage you to visit their web site to learn more about DNA testing and the Family Tree Reconstruction projects.

If you are interesting in participating, contact Linda (project coordinator).  If you qualify, a test kit and instructions will be mailed to you.

The more participants we get, the more proof we will have to find the elusive answers to those important family tree questions.
