Bill Hyde, Nellie Miller Wilson and Leo Wilson
Descendants of Zebedee Wiseman Wilson

Zebedee Wiseman Wilson, oldest son of William Wilson and Margaret  Allred, was born March 20, 1823 in Randolph County, NC.  An old Bible record says that he was born in Deep River near Solomon’s Creek.  He remained in Randolph County until at least the mid 1840’s.  He arrived in Warren County, TN, about 1848 where he married Sophronia Elizabeth Bracken.  They are listed in the 1850 census of Warren County.  His parents, William and Margaret Allred Wilson were in Randolph County at this time, but they also went to Warren County, TN, before 1860, when they and their two single children, Nancy and William J., are found living with Zebedee Wiseman and his wife, Sophronia.wpe48.jpg (20685 bytes)

William and Zebedee bought land in Warren County near the Jacksboro Community.  Click here to read transcribed copies of their deeds.

Zebedee and Sophronia were living here when the following children were born:

I am the grand-daughter of Zebedee Forrest and I keep in touch with Leo Wilson, a grandson of William Martin Wilson, who lives in Hopkinsville, KY and with Bill Hyde, a grandson of Manley Hammer who lives in Dallas, TX.  There are many descendants of William and Margaret Allred Wilson still living in Warren County, TN.

Zebedee Wiseman volunteered for service September 6, 1861 at Camp Smartt, TN with his brothers William J. and Manley Hiram.  Also enlisting on the same day were cousins David M. Wilson, son of Isaac; Leander Wilson, son of Robert; and Thomas Wesley, son of Thomas.  Isaac, Robert, and Thomas were brothers of William Wilson, father of Zebedee Wiseman, William J., and Manley Hiram.

William J. and David M. died in a prisoner of war camp at Rock Island, Illinois.  Zebedee Wiseman lost his life in the Battle of Shiloh and is presumed buried in a mass grave at Shiloh.

Records from the War Department, Adjutant General’s office show that Z. W. Wilson, 2nd lieutenant, Co. G. 35th Infantry, Mt. Rifle Regiment, Confederate States Army, enlisted Sept. 6, 1861, at Camp Smartt, also shown as McMinnville, TN, age 39 years.  The company muster roll dated July 18, 1863, shows him “missing April 1, 1862”.  Supposed to be killed.  Other records show he was killed at Shiloh April 7, 1862.

Copy as sent to Mrs. John (Virgie) Scheidegger, S. High Street, Winchester, TN from The War Department Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D.C., December 2, 1940.

A letter from Captain Ed J. Wood from camp near Corinth, MS, April, 1862:

Inventory of the effects of Z. W. Wilson, 2nd lieutenant of Captain E. J. Wood’s Company missing since the Battle of Shiloh on 7th of April, 1862.  Due him for 26 days service at $17 per month, $14.75. Due him for 2 months __days as 2nd lieutenant at $80 per month

$192.40.  Total amount due $207.15.  The above statement is correct to the best of my knowledge.
                                                                      Signed: Captain Ed J. Wood

Sophronia, widow of Zebedee Wiseman, was married a second time to a cousin of Zebedee’s, Hugh Jackson Wilson.  They had three additional children:  Callie, Hugh, Jr., and Sarah “Sallie”Ann.  Hugh and Sophronia are buried in Wilson Chapel Cemetery near Morrison, Tennessee.
